Wayne William Grey

On January 6, 2017, surrounded by his loving family, Wayne William Grey of Ellenville succumbed to his year-long battle with cancer. He was 62 years old. He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Bonnie; children: Jeffrey, Erin and Carly; granddaughter, Chloe; his brother, Clifford and sister, Patti. He is predeceased by his parents and his sister, Shari Galloway.

Wayne was born on January 20, 1954 in Manhattan to Joyce (Smith) and Walter Grey, before moving to Ellenville, NY where he matriculated at Ellenville Central. A talented athlete, Wayne was popular amongst his peers and frequently recalled times spent on the basketball court and football field as some of best moments of his life. An Ellenville High School graduate of the Class of ’72, Wayne went on to settle down locally and start a family. After several years as a salesman, Wayne came upon a job that turned into a beloved, nearly 17-year career, as a Corrections Officer at Ulster Correctional Facility- where he forged bonds of brotherhood with his colleagues.

When not on the job, Wayne shared his favorite pastime with his son; playing a round of 18-holes whenever possible. His love of sports further included his life-long commitment as a Yankee and Giant’s fan (often berating his daughter for her preference of Boston teams). However, far exceeding the passion he had for sports, was the love he had for his family.

Memorial services will be held from 4 to 6 p.m.  Thursday, January 12, 2017 at Loucks Funeral Home, 79 North Main Street, Ellenville, NY 12428. A funeral service will be held at 6 p.m. on Thursday evening, with Rev. Mike Sparrow officiating.
