Our dear mother, Sarah “Sally” Berkowitz Berger, of Ellenville, NY, passed away on February 4, 2021. She died peacefully, at home, surrounded by her loving family.
Born on July 15, 1925, to Rose and William Berkowitz, in Bayonne, NJ, her family moved to Spring Glen, NY when she was 9 years old. She lived there and in Ellenville for the remainder of her life.
There was never a day we didn’t feel loved. She was an amazing mother, wife, grandmother and great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend.
Sally was a self-taught artist and a lifetime student with her close friends in the Garrett Society, an avid reader, a fabulous cook and gardener. She was a generous supporter of many organizations, both locally and around the world, and did it in a quiet and humble manner.
She is survived by her daughter Bonnie (James), her sons Robert (Karen), Peter (Marla) and Jonathan; grandchildren Sarah Berger (Donald Langlois), Hannah (Che) Black, Adam (Alicia) Rothenberg, Lucas, Daniel (Christine), Anne, Joanna, Louis and Max Berger. Great-grandchildren Tyler, Ava, Ella, Asha and Simon, and many dear nieces and nephews.
Sally was predeceased by her beloved husband Louis, her parents, her youngest son Joshua, her sisters Lillian and Jacqueline, and brothers Saul and Joseph. Heartfelt thanks to Mom’s special caregivers and friends: Nancy, Kaleem, Margaret, Bo and Aga.
Private, family-only graveside services will be held on Sunday, February 7. There will be a celebration of her life held at a later date.
Donations may be made in Mom’s memory to the ARC of Ulster-Greene, Ellenville Regional Hospital, local food bank, or charity of your choice.
