Roger W. Van Leuven of Ellenville passed away on Monday, November 11, 2013 at Kingston City Hospital surrounded by his family. He was 91.
He was the son of the late Winslow and Bertha Veres Van Leuven born on May 8, 1922 in Highland, NY.
He proudly served our country in the United States Army during WWII. For many years he worked for Ford Motor Company until his retirement. His family was part of the original settlers to come to this area dating back to the 1663. They were best known for being the Huckleberry Pickers and having a store located on the 4 mile post on Smiley Road. In the Trapps Hamlet located on the Mohonk Preserve the last standing house from that era, belonging to his family has been dedicated and recorded in the National Historical Registry. Several books have been written by Bob Larson and Robi Jodephson recording the life experiences him and his family endured living on the Shawangunk Mountain Range. He loved horseracing and was an avid member of OTB and he enjoyed socializing at McDonalds. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather.
He is survived by his devoted wife Marie Van Leuven, his children Gary Van Leuven, Thomas Van Leuven and his wife Christine, Diane Denman and her husband James and Cathy Van Leuven, his grandchildren Andrea Van Leuven, Krista Brown, Jessica Figueroa, Nicole Van Leuven, Justine Sarah Van Leuven, great grandchildren Justin and Jennah Hammel, and Gianna Santiago, his siblings Doris Hall, Ethel Bittner, and Alice Bradshaw, sister- and brother-in-laws Josephine Van Leuven, and Shirley Clayton and Walton Bollin and his wife Ora, his special niece Barbara Smith, and his feline companion Rosie, and several nieces, nephews and a host of friends.
Visitation will be at Loucks Funeral Home, 79 North Main Street, Ellenville, NY 12428 from 5-8:00pm Today, Wednesday, November 13, 2013. There will final viewing at the funeral home on Thursday, November 14, 2013 at 9:00am followed by a Mass of Christian burial at St. Mary’s St. Andrews Catholic Church, State Route 209 Ellenville, NY 12428 at 10:00am. Interment will follow at Fantinekill Cemetery, Ellenville, NY 12428.
