Robert James Dowling a lifelong resident of the Ellenville/Wawarsing area passed away on Monday, April 20, 2015 in New London, CT. He was 91 years old. Robert was born on February 2, 1924 in Wawarsing, NY; he was the son of James and Ida Viette (Dayharsh) Dowling.
Mr. Dowling was a WWII Veteran of US Armed Forces Army Air Corps. He entered into active service on August 6, 1943 and served with the 414th Fighter Group. He was honorably discharged March 17, 1946.
He Married Florence Mary (Marks) Dowling in Ellenville, NY on September 4, 1948.
Bob was a Corrections Officer at the Eastern NY Correctional Facility at Napanoch, NY for 25 years having retired in 1978. He loved golfing and remained active in the community by being a member of the Amateur Radio Club, Shawangunk Golf Club, Elks Club and American Legion where he was the past commander. He also served as Trustee and Mayor of Ellenville, Wawarsing Town Councilman, and worked as an aide to State Senator Charles Cook.
Throughout his life, Bob retained a youthful good nature and love of humor. Nothing was dearer to him than his family and friends. He will be deeply missed.
In addition to his wife Florence, Bob is survived by their children; Patricia K. Dowling, PhD of Mahwah, NJ and Barbara D. Kanter and her husband Eric, of Niantic, CT.
Bob was predeceased by his brother, Edward Dowling and his sister, Kathryn L. Dowling
Visiting will be held on Thursday, April 23rd from 7-9pm at Loucks Funeral Home, 79 N. Main St. Ellenville. A celebration of his life is scheduled for Friday at 10am at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Fantinekill Cemetery.
