Reverend George Peter Fischer Jr.

Reverend George Peter Fischer Jr. of Ellenville, NY, passed away peacefully at home with his family by his side on Thursday, June 2, 2022.  He was 82 years old. George was born on January 28, 1940 in Randolph, NJ; he was the son of George and Maude (Tredway) Fischer. 

George grew up in Succasunna, NJ and graduated from Roxbury High School. He furthered his education earning a Bachelor’s of Science Degree from West Virginia Wesleyan College and a Master of Divinity Degree from Drew University. George served as a United Methodist Minister in The Greater New Jersey Annual Conference for 41 years.  During his ministry he served in Bayonne, North Plainfield, Piscataway, Wayne, retiring in 2004 from Bridgewater.  After retirement from full-time ministry, he served part-time at the Peapack-Gladstone UMC and as an interim pastor in Ulster and Sullivan Counties in New York. 

George enjoyed the outdoors. Gardening, mowing his yard, and bird watching were a few of his passions. He also enjoyed golfing, fishing and cheering on the Giants and Yankees. George had a great sense of humor and quick wit and was always ready with a joke or a one-liner.  He also never passed someone by without greeting them with a warm smile. The lyrics of his favorite song, "It's a Wonderful World", by Louis Armstrong, best describe his outlook on life.

He is survived by his wife, Gretchen Den Braven-Fischer whom he married on Aug. 20, 1960; their children, Gregory Fischer (Marci) and Susan Croggon; grandchildren, Rachel and Victoria Fischer, Matthew and Emilie Croggon, as well as a wide extended group of family, and friends who were like family. 

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, June 5^th at the Grahamsville United Methodist Church at 3:00 pm and on Friday, June 10th at the Bridgewater United Methodist Church at 4:00pm. Immediately following will be a time of fellowship in the church social hall.
