Michael Alan DePuy
12/23/51- 8/11/17
"Put a candle in the window, 'Cause I feel I've got to move, Though I'm goin', goin',
I'll be comin' home soon... Long as I can see the light". Mike DePuy, 65, of Ellenville,
New York, passed away on the early morning of August 11, 2017. He was survived by
his soul mate Candace, his children, grandchildren, brothers, sisters, good friends and many
nieces and nephews. Referred to as the living legend, the cat with nine lives, and
a fighter by the staff of ORMC, he didn't allow his illness to define him. He was the Jack of all
trades and the master of none. Whenever anyone needed anything fixed he was usually
their first call. It may not have been done safely, or by the book, but it got done. He loved
rat rods, fishing, hunting, classic country music, his era of rock, a non filtered cigarette,
coffee, steak, and making people laugh. "I hear your laughter and it dances in my head." Dad
didn't dance, he captured the beat with his index finger. Playing cards, "The secret to
survivin' is knowin' what to throw away and knowin' what to keep." He lived his life his way
and the end wouldn't change that. A week after his last rites were read he met his
destination. "It's better to burn out than fade away." Dad quest, the longest possible way to
get anywhere. A phrase we used when asking him for directions. Perhaps it was a lesson in
slowing down or exploring your options before taking the road most traveled. His love for
life will be missed. To us, he will always be a hero and we are proud of his fight. "Don't be
angry...Now that time has turned the pages it's the sweetest joke on Earth...That I have you
near forever by my side."
A Celebration of Life will be held Friday, August 18, at 3pm in Ellenville to honor his life.
