Karl T. Henkel of Ellenville, NY, passed away in the comfort of his home surrounded by his loving family on Tuesday, October 19, 2021 after a long fought battle with cancer. He was 81 years old. Karl was born on February 27, 1940 in Manhattan, NY; he was the son of the late Karl F. and Adelaide (Farrell) Henkel and brother to both Adelaide Henkel and Christine Ochtun (predeceased).
Karl was a patriotic man who was passionate about serving his country. He served in the United States Army with the 101st Airborne and was honorably discharged in 1959. He had a passionate career as an FDNY Fireman having worked with Engine Company 68 in the Bronx for 25 Years. He exemplified what it meant to be a fireman so after retirement he began his own fire safety business. More recently he continued his joy for working in the field and was the fire code inspector for both the Village of Ellenville and the Town of Wawarsing.
Karl was a wonderful father, husband, and grandfather who always knew how to light up a room with his great sense of humor. He is survived by his wife Theresa (Harman) Henkel whom he married on June 11, 1988; his daughter, Lorraine F. Henkel; his son, Karl P. Henkel and his wife Carolyn; step children, Frank R. Kruszeski and his wife Lauren and Joanne E. Duggan and her husband John; grandchildren, Kathryn E. Duggan, Thomas B. Duggan, Robert M. Kruszeski and Max J. Kruszeski as well as his niece and nephew.
Memorial visitation will be held on Thursday, October 28th from 4:00 to 7:00 pm with a brief funeral service starting at 4:00pm at Loucks Funeral Home, Ellenville. Face coverings are required inside the funeral home. Interment with military honors will take place at 11:00 am on Friday, October 29th at the New Paltz Rural Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in Karl’s name to Tunnel to Towers Foundation (t2t.org) or Hudson Valley Hospice (hvhospice.org).
