John J. Schoonmaker Sr., of Napanoch, passed away on Thursday, March 30, 2017 at Ellenville Community Hospital. He was 92.
He was born March 23, 1925 in Kingston, NY to Percival C. and Mary Bode Schoonmaker.
John graduated from Kingston High School then went on to proudly serve our country in the US Navy from 1943 to 1946. He was a member of Cook Taylor Post, American Legion and a member of Christ Lutheran Church of Ellenville. He worked as a mason and was involved in much of the construction in Ellenville and the surrounding area and was always around to lend a helping hand to family and friends. In his free time he loved fishing and spent many hours doing just that with his son. You could often find him hunting with his metal detector. He loved his family and was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, great-great-grandfather and uncle, he will be deeply missed.
He is survived by his wife Phyllis; a son John Jr. and his wife, Patricia; his granddaughters Lori and Gretchen Ardizzone and Pamela Kresser; one great-grandson; two great-granddaughters; one great-great-granddaughter; and a niece Mary Grant and her husband James. He is predeceased by his brother Edgar Schoonmaker and sister Mary Fede.
In lieu of flowers, donations in John’s name can be made to Christ Lutheran’s Church 105 Center Street. Ellenville, NY 12428.
Visitation will be held from 6 to 8pm on Monday, April 3rd at Loucks Funeral Home, 79 North Main St. Ellenville, NY 12428. A funeral service will be held at 11am on Tuesday, April 4th at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Fantinekill Cemetery with full military honors.
