Napanoch

James F. Cone Jr., DVM of Napanoch, NY, peacefully passed away on November 13, 2023, surrounded by his beloved family in the comfort of his home. He was 88 years old. Born on December 1, 1934, in Brooklyn, NY to the late Caroline (Johnson) and James F. Cone Sr., Jim leaves behind a rich legacy that touched the lives of many.

Jim's journey began at Haldane High School in Cold Spring where he acquired his diploma and embarked on a path that would shape his life's work. He enlisted in the Army and was trained as a Russian interpreter at the Army Language School in Monterey, CA. He then worked for the United States Army Security Agency as an interpreter in Germany from 1955 to 1957.

Following his honorable discharge, Jim pursued higher education at Cornell University where he obtained a Bachelor of Science degree. His thirst for knowledge led him to further his studies at Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine, where he acquired the skills and expertise that would lead him to fulfill his lifelong passion of providing compassionate care to animals. Jim's dedication culminated in the establishment of his own practice, the renowned and much-loved Napanoch Animal Hospital.

Jim was not only committed to his profession but also active in his community. He was a valued member of the Ancient Order of the Hibernians and the Knights of Columbus, dedicating himself to their missions. He generously served on the board of Ellenville Community Hospital and as a school board member for the Ellenville School District. Additionally, Jim's passion for his field extended to being an esteemed member of the American Veterinary Medical Association.

Beyond his professional endeavors, Jim held a deep appreciation for antique cars, but his true joy came from spending cherished moments with his beloved grandchildren.

Jim is survived by his devoted wife Sally DeMichael Cone, whom he married on December 11, 1955. Together, they built a loving family that includes their children Karen Coombe and her husband Ric, Kevin Cone and his wife Leslie, as well as his cherished grandchildren Patrick and Rebecca Coombe and Layne Miller. Jim's memory will also be treasured by his brothers-in-law John Hopper and Alan DeMichael and his wife Susan. Additionally, he leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceding Jim in eternal rest are his beloved granddaughter Michaela Coombe and his siblings Ann (Donald) McGrath, Carol Cone, Lambert Cone (Theodora), and Kathleen Hopper.
